Anke Mila Menck
Black field / C, Installation, cardboard, 140×200×2,5 cm, 2009
Sculpture, Fiberboard, 2 parts, each 90×180×1,9 cm, 2008

Anke Mila Menck’s Black Field is the result of an interest in rough cardboard material and the observation that the cardboard’s edges have a shiny surface. As the title suggests, this work is to be presented on the floor. Arranged precisely, thousands of handmade, slender strips of cardboard build up a rectangle which, despite its precise form, has an internal liveliness. Cutting the strips took days, a process which developed a rather contemplative rhythm. The shape of the circle ring is a constant motif in the work of the artist, she always uses fibreboard which she polishes and covers with varnish. Her work C consists of two parts: a ring with a 1.8 meter diameter is cut into two halves, then varnished in violet with the edges contrasting in bright red. Arranged to offset one another, the pieces are mounted on the wall. Within the context of the exhibition, the obvious division of two parts is additionally significant, as is the accentuation of the raw edges/borders.
