In her work Shift – Staatsbank der DDR / Hotel de Rome, Beatrice Minda shows the transformation of the former state bank of the GDR, which was used as a cultural space until a couple of years ago and has now been transformed into a luxury hotel. A representative building changes with society and with the function it has to fulfill within this society. Each change and conversion is accompanied by a more or less radical appropriation of the spaces. The unvisible hand of the particular capital deletes the preceding function. In this process, some of the traces are erased, others can be preserved. Minda presents phases of transition, history as sedimentation. Hereby she tries to make the change of atmospheres visible and perceptible. This work gets an additional dimension in the context of this exhibition, as the Hotel Dajti will be transformed into a ministery soon – a similar change of function. As an allusion to that concern, Beatrice Minda shows additionally one photograph of the room that she took in summer 2008. It is in this room where she presents her work in this exhibition.
