The works of the Chinese artist shown here were created between 2000 and 2009, with the edited images originating from a variety sources. Portraits of friends, acquaintances, gallerists, collectors contrast with a vanitas motif or with a weary American flag in front of a sad background. For Jin Lie art is a means to approach and get closer to the themes like »memory« –be it biographical, be it social/historical phenomena, each with its own visual language. Lie’s technique is somewhere between painting and drawing (he uses oil colors and restrains of solvent materials), becoming an aesthetic language by transforming pieces of visual memory’s archive into a culture of memory: by using a similar format throughout, he eliminates any evaluation and difference, as is typical for archives.
