Zuzanna Skiba’s theme has been – for the las 20 years – the contemplation about the world, using topographical, political and social information, as well as personal memories. Maps put rational measurements to a place of intuitive search; apparently they offer a solution for the lack of orientation and provide security. But at the same time they reduce the complexity of the world: Contradictions, ambivalencies and indistinct things are denied. Zuzanna Skiba uses the technique of mapping for her drawings for the construction of abstract fields that do include those ambivalances. Her sheets have no geographical equivalents, but are metaphors for inner landscapes and events are visualised. They treat themes like attraction, closeness and distance – without having a scale as orientation point. Often the artist explores her environment – as here at Hotel Dajti – and gets to site-specific variations of her main theme.
